They denounce that they want to reduce the percentage by 50%

EN VIVO: Rueda de prensa del presidente Luis Abinader

Although the legal advisor to the Executive Branch, Antoliano Peralta, denies it, there is concern that in the constitutional reform project submitted by President Luis Abinader, the ruling party is trying to disqualify former presidents and lower the percentage of 50 plus 1 to win the elections in the first round, said this morning Deputy Rafael Tobías Crespo of the Fuerza del Pueblo.

The legislator who is part of the bicameral commission studying the initiative, explained that Peralta was asked the question, and that he responded that he hoped that after the need for the reform submitted by Abinader is approved, no one would try to add other points.

At the same time, he said that the official’s explanations do not convince the Fuerza del Pueblo, because they have not been able to convince their legislators, where 90 percent are opposed to reducing the number of deputies from 190 to 137, much less are they going to convince us.

Regarding rumors that former President Leonel Fernández would be constitutionally disqualified from running in the 2028 elections, and that Danilo Medina and Hipólito Mejía would be reinstated, he said that the legal consultant denied these versions.

Tobias Crespo said there is a danger that the ruling party will take advantage of the reform to block former President Fernandez or lower the percentage of candidates who will win the presidential elections in the first round.
