Judge Richard Concepción today rejected the lawyer’s request Matthew Castaneda to extend the period of extraction of the cell phone of the former Minister of the Interior, Carlos Morán, for the case of Los Waykis en la Sombra.
Castañeda wanted the Special Team against Corruption of Power (Eficcop) to extract chats and communications that Morán made between October 31, 2023 and May 17, 2024.
The Prosecutor’s Office opposed this request because it was outside the time frame of the events being investigated, which include the attempt by the former legal defender of President Dina Boluarte to recruit Colonel PNP Harvey Colchado. This happened between March and May of this year.
In light of this, Judge Concepción agreed with Eficcop, concluding that it is the Public Prosecutor’s Office that draws up the investigation strategy and therefore sets the time period for carrying out investigations.
The judge also rejected the request to immobilize the mobile device of the former Minister of the Interior.
Morán, as is known, gave his cell phone to Eficcop to show the messages sent to him by Mateo Castañeda, who wanted to arrange meetings with Colchado.
The PNP officer, who became an undercover agent, agreed to speak with Castañeda and thus confirmed – according to his testimony – that the lawyer was looking for him to be a mole and leak information about the investigation against Nicanor Boluarte, brother of the head of state.
The lawyer is currently facing a request for 36 months of preventive detention for the Waykis case along with Nicanor.
