AREQUIPA, Peru – An initiative called “I want to live too, please give me the chance!”I also want to live, please give me the chance)” is active in the GoFundMe platform to raise funds for a Cuban girl. The infant, who suffers from hydrocephalus, is hospitalized in Cuba.
This is Ester Lianet Asprón Rey, barely two years old, whose father is asking for help on social media to get a self-regulating medium pressure valve, essential to save the life of the minor.
A publication on Facebook The father’s report indicates that the little girl is admitted to the Pediatric Hospital of Las Tunas, currently in critical condition.
“The girl urgently needs a self-regulating pressure valve,” wrote the girl’s father, adding that he has placed all his trust in Cuban activist Nelson Álvarez, known on social media as “El Porfiao,” to help him “with this task.”
Álvarez has shared the GoFundMe accounts on his social media, promoting the campaign that began on August 31, in which money is being collected to purchase the equipment in the United States or in any country where it can be located.
“We are racing against the clock,” says the post on the charity platform, which has so far raised around 1,765 euros of a goal of 2,000.
Amid the health crisis On the island, Cubans increasingly have fewer confidence in the impoverished health system and are turning to social networks in search of help to obtain supplies or medicines that are in short supply in hospitals.
In this context, also marked by the lack of professionals and the poor condition of health centres, one of the most recognised (and successful) cases of recent months is that of the girl Amanda Lemus Ortíz.
In March of this year, Amanda received a liver transplant in Spain, after lengthy efforts by her mother to ensure that the little girl received medical attention.
Diagnosed with biliary atresia, the girl had been waiting for a liver transplant in Cuba for more than a year. Her life has been marked by long hospital stays and complications due to resistant bacteria she contracted while on the island.
The activist Yamilka Lafitaknown on social media as Lara Crofs, reported on Tuesday about Lemus Ortiz’s improvement and specified that her parents, Milagros Ortiz and Enmanuel Lemus, “now live with the tranquility and happiness of seeing (…) their daughter grow as healthy as possible.”
Until her departure from Cuba, Amanda’s mother denounced the inaction of the Cuban authorities, describing her situation as a “crime” that put her baby’s life at risk.
