Mexico returns to Cuba 46 migrants who sought to enter the US

Mexico returned 46 Cubans to the island last Friday. They were “detained by Mexican authorities in an attempt to improperly enter the United States,” as reported the official press.

The 30 men and 16 women returned on a flight that landed at the José Martí International Airport in Havana, and were “transferred to their places of residence after performing the PCR for the detection of covid-19 and receiving the pertinent medical care.” , is detailed in the same publication.

This is the third return in the year of migrants from Mexico to the Island, which now totals 210 Cubans who have seen their attempt to emigrate frustrated. The note is released one day after the National Migration Institute (INM) granted a humanitarian visa to journalists Esteban Rodriguez and Hector Luis Valdes Cochowho left Cuba at the beginning of January under pressure from the government.

“The deportation of migrants, in this case of Cubans, occurs when in addition to entering Mexico irregularly, they present altered information, they failed to comply with the exit order granted by Migration, as established by the Migration Law in its article 144″, he tells 14ymedio an INM source. “Héctor Luis Valdés Cocho and Esteban Rodríguez had an amparo and after being admitted to a station they requested refuge, a way that avoids deportation.”

“Héctor Luis Valdés Cocho and Esteban Rodríguez had an injunction and after being admitted to a station they requested refuge, a way that avoids deportation,” reports Migration from Mexico

According to data offered by the Cuban News Agency, in 2022, the Governments of the Bahamas, Mexico and the United States Coast Guard returned a total of 509 individuals to the archipelago, between maritime and air operations, a figure that exceeds those reported in the corresponding months in previous years.

Last Friday, the US Coast Guard also repatriated 29 Cuban rafters after the crew of the Coast Guard vessel Margaret Norvell intercepted two vessels, the federal agency reported in a statement.

The first group was located on February 13 in a wooden boat about 20 feet long about 21 miles west of the US coast. The second of them was discovered on the 12th in a rustic boat approximately 46 miles south of the Florida Keys.

“We urge people not to jump into the sea in unseaworthy vessels,” Petty Officer 3rd Class Patrick Nolan said.
