MADRID, Spain.- On September 18, House of America in Madrid will be the setting for the exhibition “Cuba: visions of a fragmented island”, a selection of contemporary independent Cuban short films. This event is part of the cycle “No por corto menos cine”, organized by the institution belonging to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain, and will present four short films produced between 2023 and 2024 by Cuban filmmakers based in Spain.
The screening will take place in the Iberia room at Casa de América at 6:30 p.m., with free admission until the capacity of 50 people is reached. Tickets will be distributed one hour before the start of the event.
The exhibition was curated by Cuban filmmaker José Luis Aparicio, who has selected works that address essential themes of the current Cuban experience. The short films to be screened include: Souvenir by Heidi Hassan, History is written at night by Alejandro Alonso, The broken space by Gabriel Alemán and Eduardo Eimil, and Four holes by Daniela Muñoz.
Despite their stylistic and thematic differences, these short films share a common focus: the exploration of the complex social and political reality of Cuba. Through various cinematic strategies, such as self-referential essay, experimental dystopia, genre fiction and interactive documentary, these works delve into issues such as the social and political crisis, emigration, and the loss of values within the Cuban family.
José Luis Aparicio has highlighted that this exhibition represents “a new opportunity to appreciate the richness and inventiveness of Cuban independent cinema.” He also pointed out that it will serve as a preview of the 5th INSTAR Film Festival, which will be held from October 28 to November 3 in various cities around the world, including Madrid and Barcelona.
