MADRID, Spain.- The Cuban Paralympic delegation got This Tuesday, September 3, the Paralympic Games in Paris won its first two gold medals thanks to the performances of athletes Robiel Yankiel Sol and Omara Durand, both world record holders.
In the early hours of the day, Robiel Yankiel Sol was crowned champion in the T47 category of the Long Jump, with a jump of 7.41 metres. Sol beat China’s Wang Hao, who cleared 7.32 metres, and Russia’s Nikita Kotukov (7.05 metres), who competed under the “neutral Paralympic” flag.
Meanwhile, Omara Durand, along with her guide Yuniol Kindelán, won the 400 metres T12 (visually impaired) with a time of 53.59 seconds, the best of the season. The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic champion had secured her place in the final the day before with a time of 54.77 seconds.
Durand still has two events to compete in in Paris: the 100 and 200 metres, where he will seek to extend his record.
So far, the Cuban delegation in Paris had only won one silver medal, won by Yamel Luis Vives in the 100 meters T44 last Sunday. With these three medals, Cuba is still far from the 10 medals projected by the island’s sports authorities for these games.
