As is well known, extortion of transporters is a serious problem in Peru, especially in Lima. Extortionists often demand money in exchange for not damaging their vehicles or harming their passengers.

Given this problem, according to Santiváñez, investigations indicate that the extortionists are not nationals, which suggests a possible international network behind this crime.

“The National Police has identified the criminal organization that is believed to be behind these extortions of Etuchisa buses. What we can say is that it is an international criminal organization made up of more than 30 people, and unfortunately, twe would encourage the participation of public officials,” declared Santiávez.

The minister also hinted that some public officials could be involved in protecting or collaborating with the extortionists.

On the other hand, he stated that Two criminal gangs involved in this type of crime were identified. These groups are headed by two criminals known in the criminal world: “One is Miguel Angel Marin Moron, alias ‘El Loco Martin’, and the other is Erick Moreno Hernandez, alias ‘El Monstruo’. Regarding this case, a fiscal file has already been opened,” he added.

The Mininter head’s revelation adds a new level of complexity to the problem and suggests that a stronger and more coordinated government response is required to address it.

Finally, the minister provided several actions to reinforce security in the most affected areas. Among the implemented measures are patrols and operations with identity control, such as ‘Impact’, ‘Safe Return’, ‘Safe Dawn’, and the most recent, ‘Genesis’, which will begin soon.
