Work to install new scanners is progressing at the port
The civil works for the installation of the new scanners at the port of Montevideo are progressing according to the stipulated schedule and the mobile X-ray equipment for customs control is expected to begin operating in the coming weeks. The works include the construction of protective walls against X-ray radiation to guarantee maximum security and safety for both officials and transporters.
The work for the installation of two Rapiscan Eagle T60 high-energy mobile X-ray scanners, which arrived in the country in June, consists of the construction of walls to protect against X-ray radiation, so that both the officials who will work there and the transporters who will be inspected are covered by maximum security and the radiation is harmless, reported the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The work, which is being carried out at the North access and the former Maciel access, where the equipment will operate, has horizontal reinforced concrete platforms. This will allow trucks to transit and their containers to be analyzed as they pass through the scanner, within a speed established between 4 and 15 km/h, which was stipulated to achieve greater dynamism in control and port logistics in general.
The three devices are currently located within the port, in a restricted and fenced area, with 24/7 surveillance.
With these scanners, the Government is deepening its fight against drug trafficking, something that has been a priority of this administration because it constitutes a specific measure with regard to improving public safety, the statement concludes.
