For Ali, “freedom, first of all, is individual“It is up to you, it is personal. And you are as free as you want. And however you are and want to be,” he said.
He also said that it is a word that is “very manipulated,” especially for political purposes.
“One is free when one is able to do and feel what one wants to do and feel. And it has nothing to do with it being political. It is personal. Freedom is personal,” he reiterated.
In his opinion, there is a tendency in the world “to not respect personal freedoms” that would be caused by people who promote freedom.
“All I want is for you to respect that criterion. But you see people who promote freedoms. But when you say something that is not in favor of their criterion of freedom, it is no longer freedom. Therefore, they impose their own freedom on you, which is not yours,” he answered, alluding -probably- to those who reproach him for his alignment with Castroism.
“That is not freedom,” he said of imposing a criterion of freedom. He also said that this is “a political bluff and absurdity and so on.”
In conclusion, he argued, that is not his issue. “That is not my issue. I am free.”
This is not the only controversial statement in the interview, as he formulated an idea about censorship from a conformist position, normalizing the existence of this main lack of freedom of expression. He even found positive qualities of censorship.
“Censorship is a reason that should feed your intelligence. It should lead you to see how you can get over it and how you can say what you want in other ways,” he said.
And then, as a finale, he revealed: “It should not be seen as a terrifying thing.”
Although he noted that it should not exist, he assumes it as something that “exists everywhere and will continue to exist.”
“If I’m going to pay 25 pesos to be here on this show, what I want will be said here. Because I know that they’re going to pay you 25 pesos,” he said.
In Cuba, violations of freedom – and especially freedom of expression – are frequent, although the actor, who seems unable to separate himself from his military character, does not refer to them.
