Morena defends AMLO's "Plan C"; opposition claims overrepresentation

“That is why I emphatically state on behalf of our coalition that in this first ordinary session that begins today, the bills will be discussed and voted on in accordance with the regulations, parliamentary practice and the legislative process,” he said.

He mentioned, to the applause of the Morena supporters, that today they will begin with the declaration of publication of the reform to the Judicial Branch, and then they will continue with the ruling that transfers the National Guard to the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena).

He also said that they will be “responsible” with the legislative majority that they currently have with their allies, PT and PVEM.

“Our legislative majority implies the responsibility that we assume with the commitment to continue working for the well-being of all Mexicans,” he said.

Otherwise, the opposition criticized Morena for having over-representation in the Chamber of Deputies, saying that the composition of said Chamber does not reflect “in a faithful democratic and constitutional manner the popular will”; it also mentioned that the “distortion” of the electoral rules gave a majority to someone who did not deserve it.

“We began this legislature with a majority won at the polls, the result of a deeply unfair electoral contest that has now been artificially and constitutionally inflated thanks to a model that allows the arrangements of the party leadership to be above the popular will,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PAN coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, Nohemí Luna, said that Morena and its allies will have a majority that citizens did not give them in the June 2 elections and added that said elections were unfair due to the “open and shameless” participation of the still president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“We recognize the agenda of the majority, but the majority must also recognize the agenda of the opposition, especially when the election won by the next president of Mexico is being pointed out nationally and internationally as an unfair election due to the open and shameless participation of the current president of Mexico,” he emphasized.

He also stated that the PAN will not be a “radical opposition” since they will vote with Morena on those reforms that they consider “in favor of Mexico,” and he emphasized that they will constantly be seeking consensus.

“We are the opposition, but not a blind or radical opposition, an opposition without complexes that can vote with the majority, as long as it involves actions in favor of Mexico. An opposition that seeks consensus and has its own agenda that puts people at the center, a truly humanist agenda,” he declared.

Meanwhile, PRI deputy Marcela Guerra, like the PAN, said that her party will be “responsible” in the Congress of the Union, emphasizing that they will support the initiatives of the federal government only when they are “positive” for Mexico and will reject those that they consider “affect” the country.

“We define ourselves as a political opposition party and not as an irresponsible opposition party; we are going to take a strong position, but we are going to be responsible. We will only promote and collaborate with the Government on those proposals that we consider positive for the country, and we will reject those that we consider to be detrimental to society,” he declared.

The PRI member mentioned that they will give and ask for “respect” for the debate in the Senate and in the Chamber of Deputies, because she said that a “comfortable” Legislative Branch is not useful to the country.

“We offer and demand respect as a necessary currency to foster the free exchange of ideas in the debate, because a comfortable and partial Legislative Branch is of no use to the country, since this is the essence of this entity, of this Congress, an effective counterweight to the actions of the Executive Branch,” he declared.
