Santo Domingo.- Pastor Carlos Peña, former presidential candidate of the Generación de Servidores (GenS) Party, expressed his support for the four points proposed by President Luis Abinader in the constitutional reform, highlighting that these were key elements in his own government proposal, designed to reduce public spending and the size of the State.
Peña stressed that during his Campaign President, he was the only candidate who advocated the elimination of institutions, ministries and agencies, as well as the reduction of the number of deputies and the establishment of a single legislative chamber.
He considered that, given that the proposals of reform They largely agree with the ideas of their organization, opposing them would be an unnecessary agitation and an irrational opposition, as well as a sign of incoherence.
Regarding the reduction from 190 to 137 deputies, Peña said that, as a party, GenS supports any measure that seeks to reduce the size of the State and the economic burden that institutional hypertrophy represents for Dominicans.
“So if what is going to be modified in the constitutional text is what has been proposed, it will be a Chinese copy of what we as a party have proposed,” he said.
Regarding the unification of elections, Peña recalled that this was another initiative of his government program, and expressed his satisfaction that its implementation is now being considered.
Peña stressed that each electoral process entails a cost of 10,000 million pesos from the institutional point of view, without counting the expenses that the candidates must assume at each level of election.
He said that the resources that the Government could save by unifying the elections could be used for immigration control policies, improvements in hospitals, the hiring of 25,000 additional workers in the health sector, and the installation of 5,000 primary care units to provide medical services in the communities.
“We wanted to do it as President of the Republic, but if the current ruler is doing it, then welcome. We reiterate to him and his government that all our proposals are at his disposal, without commitment and without any compensation in exchange, only so that the Dominican people may benefit,” said Peña.
He called on the Dominican people to remain vigilant to ensure that changes to the Constitution are strictly limited to the four points announced by the Government, without allowing the inclusion of additional modifications.
It is recalled that the four points proposed by the President for constitutional reform are: the protection that limits presidential re-election to two consecutive terms and never more, the consolidation of the independence of the Public Ministry, the unification of all elections and the reduction of the number of deputies.
