One of the injured in the accident at the Cienfuegos cement factory is in stable condition

MÉRIDA, Mexico – The health of one of the injured by the accident last tuesday at the Cienfuegos cement factory has deteriorated.

Dr. Soraya Izaguirre Hernández, head of the burn service, He said this Saturday to the Perlavisión television stationthat, of the four patients, three remain with favorable evolution.

Dionel Figueroa Calunga, the worker reported to be in extreme critical condition, had “hemodynamic instability on Saturday, starting with tachycardic and crackling in both lung bases.”

Two of those hospitalized received treatment without complications.

The four injured workers have been hospitalized for five days at the provincial hospital “Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima”, after the accident at the Cienfuegos SA cement factory that claimed the life of a worker.

Last Thursday, Alexei Aguilar Sabina, another of the injured, was discharged from the hospital.

The accident occurred on Tuesday after a spill of materials in one of the industry’s hoppers, used for storing and channeling materials.

The deceased was identified as Raimundo Narciso Sarría Lavin, 61 years old.

The other three injured are Francisco Díaz Urquiza, 60 years old, with 24% burns; Hermes Rojas Campos, 52 years old, with 24% burns; and Carlos Aguilar Sabina, 33 years old, with 12% burns, reported as less serious.

Workplace accidents in Cuba

Deaths from work accidents in Cuba increased during the first half of 2024. Although the total number of incidents decreased compared to the same period last year, the number of deaths increased by 8.7%, with a total of 25 deaths in 23 fatal incidents.

According to the report entitled “Labor Protection. Selected Indicators” by ONEI, reviewed by EFEIn the first six months of the year, 851 occupational accidents were recorded, 34 fewer than in the first half of 2023, representing a reduction of 3.8%.

The number of injured people decreased by 5% compared to the same period in 2023, totaling 864 people affected.

However, the mortality rate, which measures the number of deaths per 1,000 injured, increased from 25.3 to 28.9 points, which underlines the greater severity of the accidents recorded.

The sectors most affected by occupational mortality were TransportStorage and Communications, with six deaths; Agriculture, Livestock, Hunting and Forestry, with four deaths; and Manufacturing Industries, Electricity, Gas and Water Supply, and Commerce, with three deaths each. These data reflect the persistence of significant risks in key areas of the Cuban economy.
