In front of high school students from 14 UNAM campuses, nine from the National Preparatory School (ENP) and five from the College of Sciences and Humanities (CCH), the rector Leonardo Lomelí reported that 35 thousand new students will receive 150 thousand books as a welcome gift.

These works, he said, are indispensable tools for questioning, dreaming and building a better, more sustainable future with less inequality. At the Exhibition and Congress Center, he said that “this award seeks to start this wonderful journey and enrich your academic career. It is an act of welcome and it is also a commitment that we make to you: UNAM supports you from now on and throughout your university career for your intellectual and personal growth.

These combos that you receive today are a small sample of everything that the university has to offer you and represent the first step in a journey of learning and discovery, which I hope you will travel with joy, impetus and determination.she stressed at the ceremony held on the occasion of the VI International University Book Fair.

Rosa Beltrán, coordinator of Cultural Diffusion, pointed out that the book packages – given to a representative group and later to all new entrants – include texts by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Lope de Vega, Miguel León-Portilla, Guadalupe Marín, Marcela del Río, Emily Dickinson, Xavier Villaurrutia, María de Zayas, Vivian Abenshushan and Alberto Chimal, among others.

He added that this year the Summer Book strategy was started with the delivery of Protest song to be read on vacation.

The director general of the ENP, María Dolores Valle, thanked her students for their gifts, and hoped that they would develop a taste for reading, a fundamental tool for their daily lives.

CCH Director Benjamin Barajas said that giving away books is an elegant and genuinely university-like way of offering students a warm welcome.
