Trump backtracks, says he will back Florida abortion ban

Donald Trump

Washington, Aug 31 (EFE).- Former US president and Republican candidate for the White House, Donald Trump (2017-2021), retracted his statement and spoke out against an amendment that would repeal the Florida abortion ban after six weeks of gestation.

The New York tycoon, who lives in Florida, is called to vote on November 5, coinciding with the presidential elections, in a referendum to eliminate the six-week ban imposed by his party colleagues.

On Thursday, he went off script, saying he is against restricting abortion to six weeks of pregnancy, a deadline that many Republican-governed states are imposing but which he said seems too “short.”

“I’m going to vote that we need more than six weeks,” he said in an interview with NBC News, implying that he would support the amendment promoted by pro-abortion groups.

His campaign later said he had not decided how he would vote and had only given his opinion on that margin, and Trump himself qualified his comments on Friday.

“It takes more than six weeks. (…) But at the same time, Democrats are radical, (…) so I’m voting no for that (last) reason,” he said at a rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where he falsely accused the opposing side of allowing abortions in the ninth month and even of “executing” babies after birth.

US Vice President and Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, He criticized his November 5 rival for these latest statements.

“Trump has just made his position on abortion very clear: he will vote to uphold a ban so extreme that it applies before many women even know they are pregnant,” he said in a written statement released by his campaign.

Trump, in her view, “thinks it’s a ‘beautiful thing’ that women in Florida and across the country are being turned away from emergency rooms, facing life-threatening situations, and forced to travel hundreds of miles to get the care they need.”
