AP Congressman Edwin Martinez says he wants to be president

The congressman for Popular Action, Edwin Martinezinvestigated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office as a presumed member of the so-called group ‘The Children’who is close to coup leader Pedro Castillo and who tried to interfere in an eviction in the province of Castilla, Arequipa region, last Friday, August 30, wants to be president of the Republic.

The legislator expressed his interest in running for the highest office in the Nation in the 2026 general elections.

“I want to be president. I am one of those mountain people who set their goals. When I was a boy selling yogurt in Mariano Melgar, I said: ‘I want to be mayor to build my school,’ and I didn’t build my school, I built seven schools. Then I said: ‘I want to be regional governor, but I couldn’t be regional governor because the possibility of going to Congress came up, I won the Congress of the Republic, I can’t be regional governor anymore; I dream of being president,” he told reporters. And he assured that he has the support of the population to do so.

In the case of Edwin Martínez, he has been involved in a series of incidents during his congressional term. In March 2023, he was attacked by a resident with whom he ended up getting into a fight, which required police intervention.

Months later, in June, during a presentation in the Cerro Colorado district, he was also attacked by a mob that threw dirt, bottles and even stones at him.

And this past Friday, the 30th, he tried to thwart an eviction in Castilla, Arequipa. Martínez spoke by phone with the attorney general, Dixie Rodríguez, whom he questioned for carrying out the measure that, according to the legislator, had not complied with the respective procedures.

Faced with this situation, Rodríguez rejected the interference and warned the congressman that his actions were incurring in influence peddling.

Martínez is the second candidate from Acción Popular to run for President. Days ago, Alfredo Barnechea expressed the same desire, saying that he has all the chances to win “because there is no presidential candidate in front of me who can face me in discussing Peru.”
