AMLO and Sheinbaum inaugurate the second stage of the Mexico-Toluca Train

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, Governor Delfina Gómez and the Head of Government of the capital, Martí Batres, were in charge of cutting the ribbon on the project.

”There are principles and causes that have to do with continuity. Who brought back the passenger trains? When Zedillo was in power, he privatized the trains. President López Obrador brought back the passenger trains: the Insurgente, the Tren Maya, the Interoceanic,” said Claudia Sheinbaum at the inauguration event.

“We will start two projects to the North: a train from Mexico City to Nuevo Laredo and another train that goes the other way: Mexico-Guadalajara, to Nogales. Trains are a symbol of the Fourth Transformation,” he explained.

In his speech, López Obrador highlighted the infrastructure works carried out during his administration and thanked all those involved in the projects.

”Mexico is a great Republic, it is a cultural power and that is why it has very good, responsible and creative workers. It is the heritage of the deep Mexico,” he said.

The new train has the capacity to transport up to 235,000 passengers per day and is expected to save 1.5 hours of travel time, on a journey that will take 39 minutes in total.

Initially, the cost of the trip was standardized at 15 pesos, but as of June 2024, a system of tiered fares was implemented, according to the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF).

The maximum cost of the open section will be 90 pesos for the journey from Observatorio to Zinacantepec.
