Dictatorship banishes environmentalist Jaime Incer Barquero, one of the oldest advisors to the Presidency

the scientist Jaime Incer Barqueroone of the President’s longest-serving advisors on environmental issues, was blocked from entering Nicaragua by order of the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

Journalist Carlos Fernando Chamorro, director of Confidencial and the program Esta Semana, confirmed the banishment of environmentalist Jaime Incer Barquero through his social networks.

“The Ortega Murillo dictatorship exiled Dr. Jaime Incer Barquero, preventing the most prestigious scientist and environmentalist in the country from returning to his homeland. It is his and her cruelty and moral misery, against the dignity of Dr. Incer, who has never knelt before power,” Chamorro wrote on social media.

According to sources cited by Canal 100% Noticias, environmentalist Barquero was due to return to Managua from a trip from Miami on August 28. However, when he tried to board the return flight, he was notified that he was prohibited from entering.

“Don Jaime (Incer) remains in Miami with his wife. They were about to board (their flight) and they were called to be told that they could not because of a ban in Nicaragua,” said the source cited by 100% Noticias.

More than 10 years as presidential advisor

Jaime Incer Barquero, almost 90 years old, is one of the most renowned scientists in Nicaragua. He has studies in Pharmacy and Chemistry and a postgraduate degree in Biological Sciences. In addition, he has held public positions as minister of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Marena), advisor on Tourism Development projects and the Library of the Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN), and as environmental advisor to the National Commission of the Grand Interoceanic Canal.

He was also president of the Nicaraguan Foundation for the Conservation of Nature (COCIBOLCA) and the Nicaraguan Foundation for Sustainable Development (FUNDENIC).

In 2009, the dictator Ortega even appointed him as an advisor to the Presidency on environmental and natural resources issues. But in 2018, in the context of social protests, Barquero resigned from that position.

In 2022, according to an investigation by Nicaragua Investiga, Barquero was still listed on the Presidential payroll and receiving payment as an advisor. The scientist confirmed that he continued to receive a check from the Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN), arguing that his resignation was not accepted and that the money was to “justify” reimbursements for previous work.
