Chicken shortage and price, a problem that has been going on for months

Escasez y precio de pollo, problema de hace meses

There are few chicken units that are still seen on tables and in grocery stores. white meat that Dominicans consume the most is expensive and continues to be scarce in the different sales stands in the popular neighborhoods of Greater Santo Domingo.

For weeks now, chicken has reached a price that is considered too high not only by housewives, but also by sellers.

Yesterday, the price of a pound of chicken was between RD$85.00 and RD$90.00 at sales stands, but in grocery stores it was sold for up to RD$100.00.

According to polleros, not only have their sales fallen due to the price at which they have to sell, but there are also persistent problems in obtaining the product for their businesses, which differs from the Dominican Poultry Association (ADA)which in a statement said that the market has improved in terms of supply, due to the projected offer.

But the problem with chicken is not just a few days old, since a month ago the Minister of Agriculture, Limber Cruzin the face of high market prices and shortages, assured that everything would be back to normal by the end of July, however the problem persists.

“I was in a meeting with the president of ADA. We talked about the issue, and they expect that in about 12 or 15 days, the solution and the level of performance will be available,” Cruz said at the beginning of July.

As the situation has spread, people interviewed by Hoy yesterday agreed that the Government has apparently not bothered to resolve the problem.

“It’s not just that chicken prices are going up and there’s no more. They just talk and don’t solve anything,” said Blanco Pérez, a salesman in the Villas Agrícolas sector.

While according to Felicia Romanowho has been selling at the Los Guandules Market for 30 years, of the 150 pounds of chicken he used to buy, they now only sell him 50 and sometimes less, due to the shortage.

He said he is buying at RD$66.00 per pound, so he has to sell at RD$90.00.

Housewives questioned about the situation said they make efforts to buy meat, but that due to the price, their families have limited their consumption of it.

Since June, it has been said that the chicken situation was due to the high temperatures in the country.
