Oscar Valdesformer Minister of the Interior, questioned the work of the current head of the Mininter, Juan Jose Santivañezwhose management he described as “a disaster.” He also questioned the fact that the National Security Council has not been convened to date.
“I think the role that the minister is playing today is a disaster. Because the first thing that the Minister of the Interior should do, together with the president, is to convene the National Council of Citizen Security to regulate all insecurity in all its fields and fronts,” he said on RPP.
Along these lines, he considered that Santiváñez “is not a conciliator” and questioned the fact that he is fighting with the Prosecutor’s Office when “they should work” together.
“What needs to be done is for both parties to work in harmony. He cannot fight with the prosecutor every day. He must approach the Prosecutor’s Office,” he added.
He indicated that there must be short, medium and long-term goals in the area of citizen security. In this regard, he pointed out that the first thing that must be done is to restructure the National Police (PNP).
“In the short term, we have to look at restructuring the police force. The PNP is not doing its job and is becoming more corrupt every day. Police are on the hunt for bribes,” he said.
On the other hand, he rejected the project that seeks to grant the PNP the task of preliminary investigations, despite the fact that the Constitution establishes that this is the task of the Public Ministry.
“The PNP has to do its job, and the PNP’s job is on the streets. The prosecutor’s office should do the investigations,” he emphasized.
Looking to 2026
Valdés referred to his recent incorporation into the Christian People’s Party with a view to the 2026 general elections. In this regard, he indicated that the ideology of the Christian Social Party was what convinced him, in addition to the admiration for former PPC parliamentarians.
“I analyzed and saw the ideology of the PPC. It is a party that has always had very good congressmen in the past. I remember Osterling, Ramírez del Villar, Polar… That is the line that identifies me,” he said.
He also considered that his ideological line is close to the free market and “a State that invests heavily in education and health.”
“I am in favour of a very small, agile, muscular State, with very strong private investment, with clear rules, which does not regulate like the current one,” he said.
