Santo Domingo.- Regarding the bicentennial municipal cemetery on Independencia Avenue, the Mayor’s Office of the National District is carrying out a comprehensive renovation of the cemetery, which is considered an open-air museum.
The intervention began last July under the orders of Mayor Carolina Mejía, with the aim of providing more dignified conditions to the cemetery that is not only visited by relatives of the deceased, but also by those attracted by its architectural and historical value.
The council stated that it is currently working on the perimeter fence, including the restoration of perimeter columns, intermediate walls, intermediate metal fences, dividing wall and painting. Likewise, the restoration process of the tombs will begin.
Likewise, in the cemetery, which dates back to 1824 and is part of the heritage legacy of the Dominican Republic for its historical and artistic merits, the north, west and south sidewalks are being reconstructed, which also includes curbs and beautification with the placement of black soil and grass. The interior path and the Independence sidewalk will also be illuminated.
In addition, the mayor’s office is working on the interior path on the main road of the cemetery, where the existing paving stones are being removed and replaced with new ones, and the Art Nouveau wall is being rebuilt. Meanwhile, on the main street and the one parallel to Independencia, sidewalks will be built and paving stones will be laid.
The profound transformation of the old municipal cemetery is driven by the mayor’s commitment to continue bringing well-being to every corner of Santo Domingo.
The old municipal cemetery houses the graves of heroes of the Independence and the Restoration, distinguished teachers, poets, politicians, scientists, musicians, artists and renowned intellectuals.
