MIAMI, United States. – The political and economic crisis in Venezuela is having a significant negative impact on Cuba’s interests, both economically and politically, said Dr. Eduardo Gamarra, professor of Political Science at Florida International University (FIU), in a statement. Marti News.

“This is bad news for the government in Havana,” said the expert, who explained that Cuba is in “an extraordinarily complex moment.” The lack of a sustainable long-term economic process and the Venezuelan crisis are daily eroding Cuba’s access to essential resources such as fuel, which Venezuela has continued to supply despite its own difficulties.

The political scientist also highlighted the political situation on the island, which is further complicated by divisions within the Latin American left regarding the legitimacy of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Gamarra pointed out that figures such as the presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaand from Chile, Gabriel Boricrepresent a more democratic current within the left, in contrast to the position of countries such as Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

“Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua think they can survive, despite the adverse international environment and the economic crisis they are facing,” said Gamarra, who questioned the viability of these development models for other countries in the region.

“Before we were talking about the ‘Cuban model’, I think that today we are talking about the ‘Nicaraguan model’ for Venezuela and even for Cuba,” he added.

The academic also questioned the Cuban regime’s repeated assertion that “Cuba remains a model” for Latin America. “It is difficult to understand, when one sees the objective reality, how Cuba remains a model of development,” concluded Gamarra.
