Unemployment falls to 6.8% in quarter ending in July

Number of people looking for work for more than two years drops by 17.3%

The unemployment rate, also known as the jobless rate, stood at 6.8% in the quarter ending in July this year, down from 7.9% in the same period in 2023.Unemployment falls to 6.8% in quarter ending in July

The indicator was also lower than that observed in the quarter ending in April this year (7.5%). The data comes from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad), released this Friday (30), in Rio de Janeiro, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

According to IBGE, this is the lowest rate for a quarter ending in July since the beginning of the survey’s historical series, in 2012.

Job

The unemployed population, that is, those who are looking for a job but are unable to find one, stood at 7.4 million people, the lowest level for the period in the historical series. Unemployment fell 9.5% compared to the quarter ending in April (783 thousand fewer unemployed people) and 12.8% compared to July 2023 (1.1 million fewer people).

The employed population reached 102 million people, the largest contingent for the period since 2012, showing increases of 1.2% in the quarter (1.2 million more workers) and 2.7% in the year (2.7 million more people).

Real income from all jobs (R$3,206) remained stable in the quarter and grew 4.8% in the year, while the mass of usual real income (R$322.4 billion) grew 1.9% (more R$6 billion) in the quarter and 7.9% (more R$27.5 billion) in the year.
