Chilean Communist Party distances itself from Boric and recognizes elections in Venezuela

The president of the Communist Party of Chile (PC), Lautaro Carmona, took a position and distanced himself from the position assumed by President Gabriel Boric, after the validation of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), in the face of the ratification of the victory of Nicolás Maduro as re-elected president of Venezuela, whom Boric has not recognized.

The party leader was asked, in an interview for an international media outlet, whether there is an “evolution” in the PC’s position after the political committee that was held a few days ago – and in which State ministers who are members of the party such as Camila Vallejo, Nicolás Cataldo and Jeannette Jara participated – and he responded that “there is no change, I would say there is a development.”

Carmona said that, unlike what the Chilean president has said in recent days, there is a separation of powers in Venezuela. “We are very clear. With great respect, in a good tone, without any alteration, (I say) we do not share certain criteria (of the President),” he said, adding that he does not want to “enter into a debate” with the head of state.

The Chilean Communist Party is part of the governing coalition that brought Gabriel Boric to the presidency. This disagreement is part of a chain of complaints and differences that the president’s political allies have against his marked change in government policy.

The statement that marks distance

Shortly after issuing these statements, the Chilean Communist Party published its position on the matter through the social network X. In it, it highlighted various points and urged the international community to “refrain from adopting positions that could foster a climate of confrontation” in the Caribbean country.

First, the letter states that “Chile’s foreign policy is led by the head of state and we fully respect that prerogative.” At the same point, it mentions that “we will value all instances and paths that allow us, as a country, to contribute to overcoming the crisis.”

Secondly, it states that “as a left-wing political force, we are a party deeply committed to the respect and sovereignty of the people” and “in light of the election held on July 28 in Venezuela, we welcome the fact that the electoral process was carried out in a civil and peaceful climate. Today we insist and advocate for a peaceful solution to the crisis to prevail.”

“With the same conviction that we defend respect for the sovereignty of peoples and the paths that Venezuelans define to resolve their conflicts, it is important to emphasize that Venezuela has been the object of unilateral economic sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies, which have been denounced and rejected by the United Nations due to their flagrant violation of International Law and their devastating impact on the internal situation of the country, including the mass exodus of Venezuelans,” reveals the third point.

The statement also states that the PC urges “the international community to refrain from adopting positions that could foster a climate of confrontation in Venezuela, which would aggravate the crisis to extreme levels. Any solution must be within the framework of unrestricted respect for human rights. Peace and respect for the popular will, expressed at the polls, are fundamental to the resolution of the conflict that Venezuela is experiencing today.”

Finally, he states that the PC claims “its unwavering commitment to democracy, pluralism and human rights” and makes “a call to not lose sight of the serious situation affecting the population of our own country, which demands urgent responses.
