Geneva, Feb 20 (Prensa Latina) The International Labor Organization (ILO) called for priority attention to those who work in the informal economy, as the World Day of Social Justice is celebrated today.
The director general of the organization, Guy Ryder, in a message released on the occasion of the date, meant that the international community has a unique opportunity to shape a recovery from Covid-19 that offers social justice to people and protects the planet from that we all depend on
In that sense, he pointed out that the current decisions will mark the direction of change, for which he urged legislators to prioritize the formalization of the informal economy, where “60 percent of the world’s workers earn a living, often in the poverty, with few rights and little protection”.
Ryder added that other measures must include universal social protection, improved protection for those who work, the sustainability of companies, the promotion of decent work and inclusive economic growth; as well as a just transition to a carbon-neutral global economy.
For this, a broader and more coherent cooperation between countries and multilateral organizations will be necessary, stressed the ILO director general.
The statement underlines that despite the great challenge that this represents, it is time for a recovery centered on people and based on the principles of inclusion, resilience, sustainability and decent work for all.
Also remember that this is a time when the demand for social justice is greater and more evident, since the crisis derived from Covid-19 exacerbated inequities, social differences, and those who were at a disadvantage before have been the most affected: young people, women, migrants, informal workers and small businesses.
