In Cusco, approximately 40% progress has been recorded on the restoration and enhancement work on the impressive set of terraces built in the Inca era at the Pan de Azúcar Rioja archaeological site, located in the Limatambo district, Anta province.

The work is carried out by the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco in sectors I and II, in which work is carried out archaeological research and restoration of architectural structures. In Sector I, 22 platforms have been worked on to date, with lengths of up to 150 metres and heights of 2 to 4 metres.

These platforms feature rustic masonry and were built as retaining walls and at the same time, for agricultural use, adapting to the topography of the land. They have boxed staircases and form overlapping corners, which give it a pyramidal shape. to the archaeological site. In sector II, 10 large platforms will be worked on that are oriented from the main road of the town of Limatambo towards the foot of the mountain.

Restoration work began in December 2020, but was halted for 10 months due to the pandemic. The works are scheduled to be completed in August 2026.with a comprehensive budget of more than 13 million 614 thousand soles.

The site resident, archaeologist Yeni Llamacponcca, stated that in the process of intervention, restoration and conservation work is being carried out on the structures of platforms, steps and canals, as well as archaeological research, recovery of stone structures, awareness raising, conservation of the natural environment and other components, which are the responsibility of specialized professionals.

He also highlighted that the population of Limatambo shows great interest in learning about the work and that support is received from residents and municipal authorities, with whom guided tours and informative talks are held. Teachers and students from the various educational institutions in Limatambo also receive informative talks to learn about the details of the work.
