Alex Sicart: Lessons must be learned from the cyber-attack on the CNE and the banking system must be protected

Digital technology expert Alex Sicart Ramos believes it is necessary to learn lessons from the cyber attack perpetrated against the Venezuelan Electoral Authority and, as a result, to protect the banking system to prevent it from being pulverized.

In making the warning, Sicart Ramos clarifies that the Americans played a key role in the cyber attacks committed against the National Electoral Council (CNE) on the day of the presidential elections and after them.

“American companies were the ones that sold part of the technology to the Venezuelan electoral system and they know the equipment perfectly well. They could easily have intervened,” said Sicart Ramos.

In light of this, Sicart Ramos believes that Venezuela should continue to encourage its scientists to develop “their own invulnerable technological systems.”

Precisely when giving us his statements, Sicart Ramos opened his laptop and a news note appeared about the inspection carried out by President Nicolás Maduro at the headquarters under construction of the University of Sciences “Dr. Humberto Fernández-Morán”, located in San Antonio de los Altos (Miranda).

“This initiative by President Maduro to create a university of sciences is a clear sign that the path to consolidating the Venezuelan economy is through training. Maduro is clear about this,” said the analyst, who sees it as positive that the Head of State has announced that this university will have space to study cyber-attacks as a new war scenario.

And in light of what happened with the cyber attack on the Electoral Power, Sicart Ramos is of the idea of creating “cutting-edge technology companies mainly in the financial area.”

The analyst justified his approach by referring to a recent attack on banking platforms in Venezuela, which prevented transactions from taking place for a few hours.

“If our national financial system is attacked, we lose economic sovereignty, we lose the payment infrastructure, as happened in these days when no bank could be used,” revealed Sicart Ramos.

In this regard, the digital technology specialist stressed that fintechs, as companies that link technology with finance, can contribute to achieving economic sovereignty “very easily.”

But he clarifies that the emergence of fintech must be done with the prior approval of the Venezuelan State agencies authorized to do so. “Fintech basically materializes in our cell phones from which we can pay for public services and carry out banking operations, among others,” Sicart Ramos clarified.

“In an increasingly interconnected world, dependence on foreign technology is a risk that Venezuela cannot afford. The recent attacks on the banking system, in addition to those suffered by the electoral system, have shown that we are a vulnerable target,” said Sicart Ramos.

Analyzing this scenario, Sicart Ramos insists that to protect the Venezuelan economy and guarantee the country’s stability, investment in the development of its own financial technology is crucial.

“Fintechs, with their ability to innovate and adapt to local needs, are fundamental in this process,” stressed Sicart Ramos, who estimated that “it is not just about modernizing, but about building a technological shield that allows us to operate safely and sovereignly in an increasingly hostile global environment.”
