Economist Gabriel Galípolo is President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s nominee for the presidency of the Central Bank. The announcement was made this Wednesday (28) by Finance Minister Fernando Haddad at the Planalto Palace. Gabriel Galípolo is nominated by Lula to preside over the Central Bank

“The President of the Republic instructed me to make a statement here, which he is sending today to the Federal Senate, to the President [Rodrigo] Pacheco and Senator Vanderlan, president of CAE [Comissão de Assuntos Econômicos]his nominee for the presidency of the Central Bank, who is Gabriel Galípolo, who currently holds the position of director of Monetary Policy at the bank”, revealed the minister.

To take office, Galípolo will still need to have his name approved by the Federal Senate, which will hold a hearing with the nominee, for a four-year term at the head of the BC, from 2025 to 2028. If approved, he will replace Roberto Campos Neto, whose term ends on December 31.

“On the same scale, it is an honor, a pleasure and an immense responsibility to be nominated for the presidency of the Central Bank of Brazil by Minister Fernando Haddad and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva,” Galípolo said alongside Haddad after the nomination was announced. He declined to answer questions out of “respect for the process and institutionality.”

Former Secretary of Economy and Transportation for the government of São Paulo, Galípolo worked at the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), the Brazilian Center for International Relations and Banco Fator, an institution he founded. In 2023, he took on the role of executive secretary of the Ministry of Finance, until he was nominated and approved for the position of director of Monetary Policy at the Central Bank, which he has held since July of last year.
