Congressman Paulo Magalhães (PSD/BA), rapporteur of the case investigating Congressman Glauber Braga (PSOL/RJ) in the Ethics and Parliamentary Decorum Council, voted to continue the investigations. The preliminary report was read this Wednesday (28). A request for review, however, postponed the vote on the text.
Braga was expecting a favorable report on the archiving of his case. After the rapporteur’s decision was known, the PSOL deputy accused the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP/AL), of plotting the revocation of his mandate on the Ethics Council.
The parliamentarian is facing a lawsuit for breach of decorum for having pushed and expelled from the Chamber a militant of the Free Brazil Movement (MBL). At the time, the deputy had been insulted by the MBL member.
After reading the report requesting the opening of an investigation by the Ethics Council, Glauber Braga called Lira a “criminal”, deputy Paulo Magalhães (PSD/BA) a “liar” and said that he will use his defense to denounce the alleged collusion to remove his mandate.
“You prepared this report based on direct coordination with the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Mr. Arthur Lira. And you created a political setup so that the report opening the procedure, to lead to a impeachment or suspension process, whatever it is you are planning to do, would be carried out on the same day as the vote that cannot save the Brazão family,” he accused.
The opinion on the case of deputy Braga was scheduled to be analyzed yesterday (27), but was postponed until this Wednesday. Today, the Ethics Council approved the request for the impeachment of deputy Chiquinho Brazão (No party/RJ), who is accused of being one of the masterminds behind the murder of councilwoman Marielle Franco. opinion for revocation still needs to pass through the plenary of the House.
In conversation with Brazil AgencyBraga stated that the rapporteur of the case, Paulo Magalhães, had told him that he would not proceed with the report. “The change of opinion of the rapporteur and the scheduling of this session for the same day as the Marielle case match other information that I have,” he pointed out.
In a statement, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies stated that insults, personal offenses and aggression are behaviors incompatible with the composure and decorum expected of a member of the Chamber of Deputies. “Incidents such as the one that occurred today, on the part of a parliamentarian who is already responding to another process before the Ethics Council, for having attacked a person present inside the Chamber of Deputies itself, the house of the people’s representatives, deserve immediate rejection,” highlighted Lira.
Bickering
After the accusations against Lira, the president of the Ethics Council, deputy Leur Lomanto Júnior (União/BA), argued with the parliamentarian and threatened to cut off Braga’s microphone. “There is no set-up in this council. I ask for respect for your excellency,” he said.
Congressman Glauber said that he will use this process in the Ethics Council to denounce the conspiracy against him and that he will invite all the witnesses he is entitled to.
Rapporteur
The case’s rapporteur, Paulo Magalhães, refuted the accusations, denied having said that he would not accept the opening of the process and also denied any connections with Lira.
“Deputy, your defense incriminates you. And I do not collude with anyone. My relationship with President Arthur is discreet. Your Excellency, who has been aggressive the whole time, is already announcing that you will be impeached. I did not expect this. Especially because I do not want to hunt you or any colleague, which is why I have returned here to abstain. [no caso Brazão]. I don’t want to revoke it, but your excellency deserves it”, he stated.
