Labor Code: Pepe Abreu affirms that unionists will not give in on the issue of severance pay

Código Laboral: Abreu Pepe afirma sindicalistas no van a ceder en el tema de la cesantía

The president of the National Confederation of Trade Union Unity (CNUS), Rafael Abreu (Pepe), said on Wednesday that trade unionists will remain firm in their position of not eliminating severance pay from the Labour Code or imposing a “cap” on it, as suggested by the business sector.

In that sense, Abreu urged legislators not to alter that provision when the Executive Branch presents the labor reform to the National Congress.

“If the government has control of its congressmen for other things, it should have it for this. We hope that No group of legislators should try to mutinybecause we have already heard some rumors with the aim of supposedly trying a project that puts the issue of unemployment into discussion”said the union leader.

«Remind those legislators that when we were on the set, where they went and everyone was, it was agreed that The only reform that would go to a tripartite space was the labor reform. “Why did we plan that? Because we know each other, we knew that if we put it in that big a range, there could be some surprises,” he added.

Abreu Pepe also highlighted that the Minister of Labor, As a representative of the State, he voted in favour of maintaining the dismissal, the main point of contention in the tripartite dialogue.

“Minister José Miguel Decamps voted with us on this issue, despite the opposition of the business sector. So, that discussion is now settled, because I see many people saying that it is still pending,” he said.

The CNUS president’s statements were made during an interview on the television program “El Día,” which is broadcast on Telesistema 11.

On the reform project

He Executive power will be submitted next week to the National Congress the draft amendment of the Labor Codewhich will keep the rights acquired by workers unchanged, including severance pay and maternity leave; introduces teleworking and improvements for domestic work; strengthens sanctions for companies that fail to comply with the 80/20 and increases paternity leave by 100%.

The same aims to strengthen the supervisory capacity of the Ministry of Labor so that, among other aspects, it can carry out inspections, supervisions and sanctions, strengthening labor conciliation on the rights and duties of the employer and the employee to set limits on conflicts and avoid abuses.

In addition, it proposes the incorporation of the teleworking modality, which they estimate will attract new talent and respond to market demands.
