More than 200 cattle farmers from different areas of the province of Chiriquí participated in the orientation day on the control of the cattle screwworm, organized by the Ministry of Agricultural Development, at the farm of producer Iván Lezcano, in Cerro Colorado de Boquerón.
The call was made by the regional director of MIDA, Félix Martínez, who thanked the producer Lezcano for offering his farm so that the technicians of MIDA and COPEG could guide the producers on the best way to control the screwworm in their cattle.
COPEG technicians recalled that it is very important to collect samples of worms and record the cases in order to have more accurate data on the severity of the pest, and that this requires the collaboration of everyone, producers and authorities.
The producer Lezcano, for his part, said that on his farm “El Milagro” there have been few cases of the screwworm, because they have been attentive to the recommendations of the technicians, mainly checking the animals and treating the wounds.
The event was attended by the Governor of Chiriquí, Aixa Santamaría, who reiterated the support of the National Government, highlighting that the control of this pest is one of the issues included in the priorities of the President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, in his state agenda, to “with firm steps” avoid greater losses in national livestock.
The National Director of Animal Health, Reynaldo Viveros, the National Deputy Director of Fairs, Kalizol Caballero, the Regional Deputy Director of MIDA, Jeyson Ortega, and Feliciano Bravo, representing COPEG, were present.
The activity culminated with a demonstration on how to treat the navel of newborn calves and dehorning.
