March in various states against judicial reform

From the Correspondents

The newspaper La Jornada
Monday, August 26, 2024, p. 8

Hundreds of people, including employees of the Judiciary (PJ), lawyers, judges, magistrates and their families, as well as members of organizations such as México Unido, marched yesterday in the main cities of at least 19 states in rejection of the reform in this area promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Mexico, this is your fight, If the people are informed, the reform will not pass!, In defense of the rule of law and the rule of law and Respect for democracy were some of the slogans chanted by the protesters.

In some of the protests, the protesters also spoke out in defense of the autonomous organizations, whose disappearance was approved by the Constitutional Points Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, and in repudiation of the overrepresentation in the Congress of the Union.

The constitutional amendment proposes electing judges, magistrates and ministers through popular vote, reducing the number of members of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation and eliminating its two chambers, among other proposals. The complainants considered that it is a serious violation of the separation of powers by the federal Executive.

It’s not going to happen, it’s not going to happen, if people are informed, it’s not going to happen.shouted the workers during the demonstration in Puebla, which brought together some 1,500 people in the Zócalo of the state capital. It was the fifth mobilization they have carried out this week.

Sixth Circuit Judge Carlos Osogobio acknowledged that there is corruption in the PJ; however, he indicated that it is not widespread and that the reform proposed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador does not combat it thoroughly.

In Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, private lawyers who participated in the rally transported a black coffin in a vehicle as a symbol of the end of the judicial career and the separation of powers, if the reform is approved.

Likewise, PJ employees marched yesterday in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, against the amendment. The risk is that we will lose all our rights and everything we have fought for, including the Independence of Mexico and the Revolution. The danger is that power will be concentrated in one person and we will then have no way to defend ourselves from arbitrary acts.explained Irma Elizabeth Monzón, secretary of the state court.

Demonstrations also took place in Michoacan, Durango, Campeche, Tamaulipas, Coahuila, Colima, Jalisco, Queretaro, Morelos, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz, Baja California, Guanajuato, Yucatan, Sonora and the State of Mexico.
