Journalist Carmela Longo was released from prison with measures of prohibition of leaving the country, regime of presentation and prohibition of declaring and writing about her case


On the afternoon of Monday, August 26, journalist Carmela Longo was released from prison after being brought before the Third Control Court with jurisdiction over terrorism.

This was reported by the National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) in a post on its social media. The journalist, who specializes in reporting on entertainment, was charged with the crimes of terrorism and inciting hatred. “She is banned from leaving the country, subject to a presentation regime and is prohibited from declaring and writing about her case.”

Carmela Longo was arrestedalong with her son, on the afternoon of Sunday 25th after a commission from the Criminal Investigation Directorate (DIP), attached to the Bolivarian National Police (PNB), arrived at her home with a search warrant “that only referred to articles 196 of the Copp (Organic Code of Criminal Procedure) and 47 of the Constitution.”

The son of the journalist was released after being questioned at the headquarters of the DIP of Maripérez. On August 20, Longo reported through her account on X that she had been fired from Latest Newsa media outlet for which he worked for almost four decades, and which after its sale in 2014, became known for being sympathetic to Chavez.

“Today, a stage of my life that lasted almost 20 years ended,” wrote the journalist, highlighting that, beyond the situation, she takes with her the affection and respect of the excellent colleagues she had during her time at the company.

Longo, who in addition to her journalistic work was a union delegate in Latest News For more than half of his career at the company, he said the reason given for his dismissal was a supposed “restructuring.” However, he was not given any additional details about what this restructuring would entail or how it would affect other employees.
