MIAMI, United States. – Nearly 10,000 families and more than 16,000 women and girls “live in situations of violence” in Cuba, said the general secretary of the Federation of Women of Cuba (FMC), Teresa Amarelle Boué, in statements to the official newspaper Granma.
According to the regime official, the registration of her organization is part of the so-called Comprehensive Strategy for the Prevention and Attention to Gender-Based Violence and in the Family Scenario, which identified 9,579 families in situations of violence.
According to Boué, the FMC is working with the Attorney General’s Office to launch an “interoperable administrative registry for tracking, monitoring and reporting in real time” on gender-based violence, “disaggregated by indicators.”
“This will help strengthen the mechanisms that guarantee the attention and detection of cases of gender-based violence and violence in the family setting,” said the official.
In early August, the island’s regime confirmed that a total of 110 women had been murdered at the hands of their partners or ex-partners throughout 2023. The figure, which was released by the Cuban Observatory on Gender Equality (state-run), only includes those cases that were tried during the past year and in which the victim was over 15 years old.

Dania Rodríguez and Omaida Hernández, heads of International Relations for the organization, interviewed by the Spanish media Red and BlackThey acknowledged that the number of femicides had increased, but they did not use the term that implies the responsibility of the State and institutions in these acts of extreme violence, but rather referred to “femicides.”
“This year, and especially since the pandemic, there has been an increase in gender violence and femicides. Cuba We use the term femicide, not feminicides (since this term defines that institutions are complicit through institutional violence and we affirm that Cuban institutions are not),” they told the Spanish newspaper.
The specialists stated that, although the Comprehensive Strategy for the Prevention and Response to Gender Violence in the Family Scenario was approved, there is no comprehensive prevention law in Cuba.
“We continue to work on prevention, especially through the Federation. The motto is ‘Zero Tolerance’ and we are studying the causes of this increase. The most important task at the moment is to empower women,” they said.
