Colombians are concerned about a possible shortage of jet fuel, even though Ecopetrol says it is not that serious

Concern in Colombia over an alarming shortage of jet fuel after the Civil Aeronautics issued a statement to airlines in the country, informing them of the possibility of rescheduling, suspending or cancelling flights from August 28 to September 4 due to a lack of sufficient fuel.

For its part, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents nearly 300 airlines, corresponding to nearly 80% of the world’s air traffic, expressed its concern about the contingency reported by Ecopetrol. This situation was due to an event that occurred on August 16 at the Cartagena Refinery, which generated an 8% reduction in deliveries of jet fuel, but which was reduced to 5% by August 24, they said.

They would take some measures in the event of a shortage

They indicated that, in light of the announcement, they are taking the necessary measures to ration the use of fuel and thus avoid the suspension of service, and reiterated their concern about the possible shortage of fuel in some airports in the country. However, they made it clear that this rationing generates little material effects.

“We want to make it absolutely clear that airlines are doing everything in their power to comply with the flight schedules that are currently scheduled,” they said in the statement. But what is causing concern is that several suppliers have announced to different airlines that there will be no fuel supplies at some airports in different cities in the country.

In the event of a fuel shortage, they would opt for some measures that can be taken from the air operations.

Ecopetrol reported calm, but Colombians are worried

In the last few hours, Ecopetrol, through a statement, assured that production and stability of the 35 units of the Cartagena Refinery have been restored and that the fuel supply is guaranteed in all segments, including that required for air transport.

To ensure availability, they have activated a work plan to guarantee supply over the next few months, and have announced the import of 100,000 barrels of fuel that will arrive in Colombia next weekend.

“Currently, the Cartagena Refinery is operating in accordance with the established production schedule to meet the deliveries of fuels and supplies required by the country,” they said.
