The health status of Juan Izquierdothe Uruguayan footballer of National admitted to intensive care after suffering a heart attack on Thursday in the middle of a match against the Brazilian team from Sao Paulohas worsened in recent hours, according to a medical bulletin published on Sunday.
The 27-year-old defender has “a progression of brain damage and an increase in intracranial pressure,” said the team treating him at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo. “Hospitalized since August 22, 2024, at 8:55 p.m., the patient Juan Manuel Izquierdo underwent new tests this Sunday, August 25. The evaluation showed progression of brain damage and increased intracranial pressure,” confirmed the medical report published by the Nacional club on its social networks.
“Juan remains in neurological intensive care, dependent on mechanical ventilation,” the statement added. Doctors who treated him said on Saturday that the player had been admitted to hospital “due to cardiac arrest of undetermined origin, secondary to an arrhythmia.”
Izquierdo collapsed on the pitch at the Morumbi Stadium in the 84th minute of the second leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16 against Sao Paulo. Since then, there have been many expressions of affection and solidarity.
