González Urrutia: The Prosecutor’s Office’s summons lacks “guarantees” of due process

Edmundo González urges security forces to stop repressing protests

The Prosecutor’s Office summoned opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia to appear before the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) on Monday, August 26 “for the publication of forged documents through the website www.resultadosconvenezuela.com.” The former ambassador responded to the summons on Sunday, August 25.

Presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia said on Sunday night, August 25, that the summons issued to him by the Public Prosecutor’s Office lacks “guarantees of independence and due process,” and urged, once again, the administration of Nicolás Maduro to appeal to “an independent and reliable international verification of the records.”

“Venezuelans. On this occasion I make a statement before you, who are the guarantors of popular sovereignty. The Public Prosecutor’s Office intends to subject me to an interview without specifying under what condition it expects me to appear and pre-qualifying crimes not committed. The Attorney General of the Republic has repeatedly behaved like a political accuser. He condemns in advance and now promotes a summons without guarantees of independence and due process,” said González Urrutia in a video posted on his social networks.

The Attorney General’s Office summoned opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia to appear before the Public Ministry (MP) on Monday, August 26 “for the publication of forged documents through the website www.resultadosconvenezuela.com,” the entity stated on its Instagram account.

«Sentence does not kill record»

González Urrutia reiterated that the ruling issued by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) cannot replace the publication of the minutes by the National Electoral Council.

«Mr. Nicolás Maduro, it is time for you to understand, once and for all, that the solution is not in repression, but in the independent and reliable international verification of the records, which cannot be replaced by a sentence issued outside the constitution. In that scenario, we will present our copies of the records of the vote counting that clearly show the will of Venezuelans to change. The truth of what happened on July 28 is what will save democratic institutions. Once again I repeat: for the peace and well-being of our country, present the records.», he said.

Finally, he demanded that the results of the elections held on July 28 be respected.

“Venezuela is experiencing hours of uncertainty and unrest, the result of your efforts to violate the will for change. The minutes are the peace,” he concluded.

On Sunday, August 25, criminal judge Blanca Rosa Mármol stated that every person summoned by the Public Prosecutor’s Office must be informed of the capacity in which he or she will testify. If he or she is summoned as an accused, he or she may choose not to testify.

“There are no interviews in criminal investigations. There are statements as a witness or as a defendant. The person must be informed of the condition in which he or she is testifying. If he or she is a defendant, he or she can choose not to testify,” explained the lawyer.
