Intense cold hits the southern mountains: Senamhi warns of temperatures of -13°C

A new cold front is hitting the southern mountains of Peru, generating a wave of low temperatures that could reach -13°C in areas above 4,000 meters above sea level, according to the latest meteorological warning from the National Meteorological and Hydrological Service (Senamhi).

Seven regions will be affected by this extreme weather phenomenon: Apurímac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Moquegua, Puno and Tacna.

Authorities have issued an orange alert in response to the possibility of various health complications in the population, especially in children, the elderly and people with pre-existing illnesses.

In addition to low temperatures, wind gusts of up to 35 kilometres per hour and light cloud cover are expected. However, temperatures will rise slightly during the day.

Recommendations for facing the cold

Given this situation, the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) has issued a series of recommendations to protect against the cold. Among them are:

  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature: Protect yourself from the cold wind by covering your head, face and mouth.
  • Wear warm clothing: Use sweaters, gloves, hats and other items that help maintain body heat.
  • Protect children and the elderly: Pay special attention to the most vulnerable groups, ensuring they are well covered.
  • Eat nutritious foods: Include fruits, vegetables, hot drinks and high-calorie foods in your diet to strengthen your immune system.
  • Go to the health center: If you have symptoms of any respiratory illness, go immediately to the nearest health facility.

The National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) is closely monitoring the situation in the affected regions and coordinating with local authorities to provide the necessary assistance to the population.
