Santo Domingo. – Starting this Monday, August 26, the 2024-2025 school year officially begins, for which approximately two million 640 thousand 334 students from the public, private and semi-official sectors of all levels, cycles and modalities of the pre-university system have been called.
President Luis Abinader and the Minister of Education, Ángel Hernández, will lead the formal opening of the school year during a ceremony that will take place at the Prof. Yluminada Mejía Pérez Elementary School, located in Arroyo Hondo, in Santo Domingo, reported the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic.
At the same time, the Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, will formally open the school calendar at the Hermanos Díaz Moreno Educational Center, located in the Gurabo sector of the province of Santiago.
The Ministry of Education indicated that of the total number of students who are expected to return to schools, 2 million 63 thousand 758 belong to the public sector and 576 thousand 576 to the private sector.
He specified that 388,743 students are from the initial level; 1,186,589 students from the primary level; 861,308 students from the secondary level, in the Academic, Technical Professional and Arts modalities, and 203,694 from the adult subsystem.
For the start of classes to be successful, the government headed by President Abinader invested RD$4,690,384,443.95 in the acquisition of 1.8 million uniforms, shoes and school supplies that were distributed between the months of April and August of this year. In addition, 12 million textbooks are being distributed free of charge, which students also have at their disposal in digital format through the platform: www.libroabierto.minerd.gob.do.
The National Institute for Student Welfare (INABIE) confirmed that it will begin distributing school breakfast and lunch in the country’s educational centers where the School Feeding Program (PAE) operates, starting on the first day of classes.
During the 2024-2025 school year, the Ministry of Education intends to consolidate the changes initiated in 2023 related to the curricular adaptation of all levels, the evaluation system and the use of learning resources, such as textbooks and technologies.
In addition, literacy will be strengthened in the first cycle of primary school, the development of skills in the first cycle of secondary school, and the practical implementation of programs on road safety, environmental education, culture of peace, school health, school gardens, comprehensive sexual education and values, robotics, and sports and cultural activities that take place on Saturdays through the Open and Active School program.
