“The protest started at Merceditas, a small neighborhood, because of the water situation. People left there protesting (…) but the protest itself, the gathering of people was here at Calzada de Güines and Siboney, around 9 pm,” he told Marti News activist Kessell Rodríguez, who took part in the protest.

This time, the protest was not about power outages, but about the lack of running water in the town for more than ten days, Rodríguez confirmed.

“We have been in this situation for some time now, they are putting it every eight days, every nine. They [Aguas de La Habana] “They recently made some repairs and installed new plastic pipes. They started to put the water back in, but it was still only every seven or eight days,” he explained.

Kessell Rodríguez said that MININT and State Security officers arrived at the scene to calm the protesters.

“Aguas de La Habana also came. They reached an agreement that they would turn on the water at 4 in the morning. A group grabbed the Aguas de la Habana official and told him: ‘If you are going to turn on the water at 4 in the morning, you are going to stay here with us until 4 in the morning.’ He agreed, and the people dispersed. The protest lasted about two hours. But they are already getting water from the Merceditas,” he said.

On Friday, Havana Waters reported on Facebook that “the Special Works Base is working on eliminating the leak in the 355mm conduit of the Loma del Cielo impeller in the municipality of San Miguel del Padrón.”

Problems with the water supply have been constant in Havana in recent months. In July, for example, the water company of the city of The South Basin’s water supply source collapsed and deprived several municipalities in the capital of this vital liquid.
