Venezuelan Foreign Minister rejects EU statement calling for verifiable results

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil said on August 24 that the European Union’s statement urging the National Electoral Council (CNE) to publish the voting records of the electoral centers will “against the sovereignty and national independence of Venezuela

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto issued a statement release on August 24, in which it “repudiates” the statements of the office of the High Representative of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, according to which the EU expressed that it will only recognize results of the presidential elections that are verifiable and complete.

Venezuela’s foreign minister called these statements a “vulgar botch job” and said they plunged the 27-nation bloc into “putrid mud.”

Gil said that this position went against Venezuela’s national sovereignty. “The continued disrespect for the sovereignty and independence of Venezuela and its public powers by the EU could become a new leap into the void that will significantly affect the diplomatic, political and economic relations that have been developing until now,” the foreign ministry said in its Instagram post.

The office of the High Representative of the EU urged the National Electoral Council (CNE) to publish and independently verify the voting records of all polling stations.

He also noted that the minutes published by the opposition, which were examined by the United Nations (UN) Panel of Experts, contain the security features of the results protocols, “thus confirming their reliability.”

In response to this, Gil said that Borrell’s statement “is not only an affront to national dignity, but is also a crude pamphlet that dares to claim as valid the fascist scam that spread forged and spurious documents.”

Finally, he urged the European community to “refrain from expressing any opinion on matters that concern Venezuelans exclusively.”
