Vicuñas are married to increase the number of animals in La Oroya

In order to increase the number of animals living freely in the hills and snow-capped mountains of the mountain range on the border between the Junín and Lima regions, the authorities and residents of the rural community of Yantac, in the district of Marcapomacocha, married two young vicuñas.

The event consists of starting at four in the morning the “Chaccu” (capture of vicuñas) with the herding of the vicuñas on horseback, surrounding the villagers with ropes and ribbons to make them enter the fence, then they sheared 220 vicuñas in the Andacancha area, under the supervision of the agrarian agency of La Oroya for the good management of this valuable animal, symbol of the shield.

Shearing animals is an activity that is regulated and must be carried out every two years, thus revaluing our ancient culture. A kilo of sheep wool costs one sol and a kilo of alpaca fiber is bought for 30 soles. Due to its fineness, vicuña fiber is the most valuable, with dirty fiber costing 300 dollars per kilo and clean fiber costing 700 dollars.
