MERIDA, Mexico – The former First producer of carbonated soft drinks in Cubathe Los Portales factory, has redirected its production to bagged syrup or flavored waters due to the shortage of raw materials.
Los Portales, a modern plant located in Guanes, Pinar del Río, has the capacity to produce 220 million cans of soft drinks and 60 million bottles annually, however, limitations with raw materials have seriously affected its viability, requires a report of Granma.
For example, so far in 2024, the lack of carbon dioxide has prevented production for about 100 days.
In this way, Los Portales has had to “bet” on “diversification” and “the search for alternatives to scarcity.”
The new line of bagged syrups will be destined for “tourist facilities and also for retail sales in stores,” Mario Venero, its director, told the official newspaper.
“We are introducing the three basic flavors that predominate in the market. That is, cola, orange and soda,” the official explained.
Venero explains that after adapting the machines to the new production line, they are currently making adjustments to the entire process to begin large-scale production in a stable manner.
The factory will have the capacity to produce one million bags per year, which will be available in five, ten and twenty litre formats.
Los Portales has also begun producing alternative flavored waters made from pineapple, apple, and soon melon.
“In addition, markets are being studied to incorporate other flavors, since it is a more natural product, and thus try to reduce dependence on carbonated soft drinks,” said the official.
