In another display of impudence, Congress wants to reaffirm the idea that they are untouchable and this time Free Peru (PL) proposes creating a commission to prosecute judges and prosecutors under the pretext of fighting corruption.

The initiative proposed by legislator Cerrón seeks to make this working group the 25th ordinary commission; that is, one of those that by law must necessarily be formed.
The proposal is based on the results of a survey which indicates that a majority of Peruvians do not trust the justice system.
Although the project recognizes that there is a Supreme Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Committed by Public Officials and the National Board of Justice, which have the authority to sanction judges and prosecutors, it insists that there is no body with popular representation that investigates magistrates.
“Through supervision, acts of corruption, such as bribery or influence peddling, can be detected and prevented in a timely manner. Similarly, the supervision of judges and prosecutors allows their performance to be monitored and evaluated, which increases confidence in the judicial system,” the document states.
If the bill is approved, Cerrón and his entourage will be able to harass any prosecutor who subjects him to investigations. And there are quite a few of them.
There is anti-corruption prosecutor Bonnie Bautista, who was in charge of the Los Dinámicos del Centro case. Also included are prosecutors Richard Rojas and Ángel Astoncondor, who found evidence of money laundering in the Cerronista campaign of 2021.
Also in the crosshairs are prosecutors Carlos Mera, who is investigating the irregular safekeeping of Cerrón; Elard Alcocer, in charge of the Antalsis case; and Ramón Vallejo, who obtained the sentence against the former governor of Junín for the Wanka aerodrome.
Among the judges who are hearing Vladimir Cerrón’s cases are Leodán Cristóbal, Walter Camarena and Guido Arroyo.
But not only Peru Libre will be able to do so, but also any other political group that sees the judges as a threat to its interests.
May prosper
With resignation, non-partisan congressman Carlos Anderson warned that Waldemar Cerrón’s bill could be supported by other parties, whose leaders and members must be held accountable to justice.
In an interview with Peru21TVAnderson said that political interests are trampling on “all logic” and claimed that it would be “nonsense” if those under investigation could persecute those who do the investigating.
“Perú Libre knows that other parties have the same problems with justice. And just as there is an animus against the press, there is also a spirit of revenge against prosecutors and judges,” he said.
Along these lines, he asserted that this initiative could only be blocked if it reaches the Congress plenary session, since, according to him, in the committee “it is not even discussed, all of that goes through like a pipe.”
For his part, parliamentarian Cerrón said in his defense that his proposal “is not revenge” and that his proposal is “the product of conversation and demand with many people.”
However, it is clear that the main beneficiaries of the eventual approval of the project are the congressmen and their leaders.
