PRM deputies say they will support reform

Dicen diputados PRM respaldarán reforma

Although there have been voices that do not agree with the reduction in the number of deputies, when the positions of each one are discussed, all PRM congressmen will vote for the proposal of President Luis Abinader, said this morning the vice president of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Eddy Olivares, and the official spokesman in the Lower House, Amado Díaz.

They agreed that differences within political parties are normal, but that in the end their position will be to support what the head of state has proposed.

They also noted that the PRM It is a mature party and the unity of its bloc of deputies will remain strong.

“As a result of this reform, we will not have the uncertainty that periodically occurs when a president modifies or attempts to reform the Constitution to remain in power longer than the time established in the Constitution that elected him. Our legislators are aware of the significance of this reform, especially in relation to leaving this legacy of great importance for the Nation that will be a contribution both from fellow President Luis Abinader and from the party to the consolidation of democracy and the stability of the Constitution,” said Olivares.

He added that “this is a very important legacy and therefore our legislators are committed to it. Other issues generate debate and that is how reforms are, but in relation to the internal unity of the bloc of deputies, that is not at stake, there is no concern in that sense, everything will turn out well.”

Olivares considered it normal to debate the issues to be reformed in the Magna Carta, but that in the end the interest of the Nation will prevail.

“The most important thing here is that the Constitution will have the stability it has never had since the founding of the Republic, due to the ambition of the presidents who at one time tried to stay in power for longer than the established period,” he said.

For his part, the spokesman for the PRM bloc of deputies, Amado Díaz, attributed the voices that have been raised in the group against the reduction in the number of deputies to the fact that the issue has not yet been socialized internally.

“I am convinced that there will be no problem and that all the PRM deputies will vote unanimously and will support the reform. This is a mature, obedient and disciplined party, where we will all come to an agreement when we have properly socialized the reform,” he said.

He added that “logically you are putting the harm in the hands of the injured party, and there will have to be socializing and passing some hands, now I have no doubt that everything will turn out well and that a single deputy will generate an atmosphere contrary to the party line.”

Abinader’s warning

When submitting the constitutional reform project, President Luis Abinader warned his legislators that they were obliged to support it or else be punished. However, the first to oppose the reduction of the number of deputies from 190 to 137 have been the pro-government members. Yesterday, the PRM deputy for the Espaillat province, José Miguel Ferreiras, warned that he cannot be treated like sheep. He said that if the number of deputies is going to be reduced, the senators and governors should be reduced to 10.
