The position of the council and the church on the woman who beheaded her daughter

La posición del concilio y la iglesia sobre mujer que decapitó a su hija

This Thursday the council expressed its position Church of Godnext to the Monte Moriah church, an entity to which Ana Josefa García belongs, regarding the woman who confessed to decapitating her six-year-old daughter in the Los Trinitarios sector, Santo Domingo Este.

Below is the full statement from these institutions:

The Church of God Council, together with the Monte Moriah congregation of the Trinitarians II, deeply regrets the loss of the girl Elianna Frías Garcia.

Since the incident occurred, we have been supporting the congregation in dealing with the grief that this significant loss represents.

At the same time, we express our solidarity with our sister in faith, Dr. Ana Josella Cuello, professor at the O&M University and distinguished medical officer of the National Army, to our brother Smerlyn and the other members of the Frias García family.

It is our duty to communicate that as an active member of this congregation, Dr. Ana Garcia Cuello had never shown any signs of violence, on the contrary, she was always a very helpful person to all those who seek help from the qualified medical professional, which is
Our institution requires a dignified and ethical treatment of information related to this case, both for the benefit of the people directly involved and of society itself, which, apart from its right to be informed, requires content that builds and does not dissociate and violates fundamental rights of all people, even more so in the cases of those whose disability prevents them from becoming aware and taking action regarding their actions. The press is called upon to contribute to an informed and compassionate understanding of mental illness beyond the morbidity produced by the events and to safeguard the rights of the affected family.

It is our wish that justice does its job to clarify what happened, and that in a correct use of the law, the public ministry acts in accordance with the instruction of evidence for and against the accused, considering the relevance of involving health professionals specialized in the area of psychiatry and neuropsychology, while applying, guaranteeing their rights to non-discrimination due to their mental condition, the right to evaluation of capacity to be prosecuted, a defense based on their mental condition, and immediately an incarceration that prioritizes their safety and that of the other inmates.

Society must recognize that this type of misfortune, or something similar, can knock on the door of any person, no matter what social class they come from, what religion they profess, or what profession they pursue.

On behalf of the Church of God and every conscientious person, we demand from the Dominican Government more public policies to address the problem of mental health of Dominicans, with guarantees of equitable access and quality in health services, in accordance with the provisions of our constitution, preserving the dignity of each patient and their families against any stigma that prevents them from requesting access to services of this nature.
