At the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, MIDES and INAU opened a space for child care

The Ministry of Social Development (MIDES), the Institute for Children and Adolescents of Uruguay (INAU), through its Early Childhood program, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of the Republic, inaugurated a Siempre center for child care for children of students and employees of the educational institution.

The center will also offer places to children from the community. The center is located on a site at kilometer 18 of Route No. 8 and Route No. 102. It offers part-time care, in 4, 6 and 8 hour shifts, to children from 0 to 12 years old, and, although it is aimed at children of students and public officials, it also offers places for the community in general.

Minister Sciarra stressed the importance of support in the area of care and stated that the ministry must collaborate with the personal development of citizens, as is the case with this type of initiatives, among others. “There is no social development without people being able to deploy all their strengths and capabilities,” he said.

The director of Care, Florencia Krall, explained that 20% of the centre’s places are reserved for children from the community who cannot, for various reasons, access child and family care centres (CAIF).

She explained that these spaces, of which there are 12 throughout the country, arise from the demand of interested parties, and that the viability of the proposals is studied by technical teams from INAU and the Care System. The teachers are hired under the standards that govern INAU educators, she explained. In all cases, the participation of a civil organization is required to take charge of the administrative management and the receipt of the transfers of funds for its operation.

The facility, which will operate at the faculty, will be managed by the Marco Podestá Foundation, which emerged from the institution itself and was established at the University of the Republic. The Siempre centers operate under the technical direction of INAU, as part of the National Integrated Care System, and are deployed with the participation of companies and unions.
