Workers at the National Penitentiary Institute of Peru (INPE) are observing an indefinite nationwide strike, which is becoming more radical every day due to the lack of response from the institution’s authorities and the Ministry of Justice. Family and spousal visits at the Huamancaca prison in the province of Huancayo are suspended.

A workers’ representative announced that today, August 21, a conversation will be held between representatives of the unions, the Minister of Economy, Justice and the Congress of the Republic. They warn that if they do not reach an agreement, they will continue with the strike.

The measures they have opted for on this fifth day of strike are to paralyze all activities within the prisons, as well as visits and administrative work, and to ensure basic services such as food, cleaning and security. The list of demands is an increase in the integral monthly remuneration (RIM) for the staff, in addition to the allocation of a 15% bonus of the RIM for multifunctional work and in adverse conditions.
