Authorities clear Pan-American highway: indigenous people demand the presence of the President

Members of the public force are carrying out an operation this Wednesday to lift the blockade of the Pan-American Highway, the backbone that links Valle del Cauca, Cauca and Nariño with the interior of the country.

The highway has been closed since Tuesday afternoon by indigenous communities in northern Cauca.

During the operation, loud explosions were heard and the situation became more complex as the minutes passed.

As the authorities’ actions advance, protesters demand the presence of President Gustavo Petro to begin talks on the future of the Indigenous Association of Southwestern Colombia (Aiso), which represents indigenous communities such as the misak, pijao and nasa.

Communities warn against the signing of a decree that recognizes them as traditional indigenous authorities of a special public nature.

(Besides: Government and unions failed to reach agreement on diesel price increase).

“The idea is not to sign anything that violates the constitution and the norms. We seek not to deepen the differences that exist internally between the communities. They are talking about recognizing them as an authority and they should do that internally. If we do it, that would be violating the constitution.”said Gabriel Rondón, deputy minister in charge of social dialogue.
