Forest fires: dense smoke forces suspension of classes in Santa Ana de Velasco

This Wednesday, August 21, the 25 de Mayo educational unit, in Santa Ana de Velasco, suspended face-to-face classes due to the dense smoke caused by the forest fires uncontrollable in the region.

“The smoke is very dense and dangerous for the health of students, that is why we have decided to change to the virtual modality,” explained Walter Algañaraz, director of the educational unit.

The measure affects 180 studentswho will have to continue their studies remotely until further notice.

The deputy mayor of Santa Ana de Velasco, Damián Matías Pesoa Surubí, expressed his concern about the fire that has already been five days ravaging the area and affecting four communities, including Santa Ana.

“The fire is too intense, We need help from the national government, “More firefighters and a helicopter are needed to contain the fires before they spread to other communities,” said the deputy mayor.

In Concepción, Five volunteer firefighters had to be evacuated to the municipal hospital due to smoke poisoning and feeding problems. They are currently receiving oxygen and serum to stabilize their condition.
