The National Superintendence of Higher University Education (Sunedu) has launched a preliminary investigation at the National University of Piura (UNP) after the arrest of its rector, Santos Leandro Montaño Roalcaba, who has been accused of receiving a bribe of 10,000 soles.
Sunedu’s intervention seeks to ensure that the university’s academic and administrative activities are not affected by this corruption scandal.
The team from the Evaluation Department of the Higher University Education Service of Sunedu, made up of officials Carlos Ríos and Evelyn Zorilla, went to the UNP headquarters to gather relevant information and evaluate the internal situation.
The officials’ visit took place after a journalistic report by Cuarto Poder revealed that Rector Montaño had received the bribe in his alternate office, supposedly related to the execution of a service within the university.
During the hearing, Sunedu representatives conducted a detailed information gathering process to ensure that the scandal does not jeopardize the normal development of academic and administrative activities at the university.
For its part, the National University of Piura issued a statement categorically rejecting the veracity of the recordings broadcast by the media outlet.
The institution argued that the accusations are part of an extortion attempt that is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Division (DIVINCRI) of the Peruvian National Police in Piura. In addition, the university expressed its willingness to collaborate with official investigations to clarify the facts.
